This action adventure, designed specifically for Island School Hong Kong, takes us to the North Island of New Zealand. Little Brown Kiwi will take you to places well known to international visitors, such as Rotorua, but we have the pleasure of introducing you to more remote places which Kiwis hold in high regard for their own adventures.
You will take part in adventure highlights that will create life-long memories. Challenge yourself and extend your comfort zone, all in the pristine environment of Aotearoa.
Your week in New Zealand will be filled with opportunities to experience adventure actives such as Sea Kayaking, Ogo, Jet Boating and Luge – to name a few. An epic 3 day expedition, starting in the Tongariro National Park, sees us hiking through volcanic terrain before Rafting the mighty Tongariro River (locally know as the Tonga-bezi!).
Most importantly, the New Zealand adventure is a chance to make new friends, build independence and have the time of your life in a safe and beautiful setting.
All Little Brown Kiwi adventures include an element of Service. You will learn about endangered New Zealand species and assist in the efforts to re-establish them in New Zealand. You may be involved in trap maintenance, habitat planting and raising awareness.
You will have the unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Te Ao Maori (the world of the indigenous people of New Zealand, the Maori) You will take part in all aspects of an overnight stay on a Marae which will include Powhiri (welcoming ceremony), Hangi (food preparation) Kapa Haka (performing art) and Poroporoaki (farewell ceremony). A highlight of this experience will be working alongside local high school kids – a real opportunity to share cultural comparisons and contrast school life.
Arrive New Zealand
Off the plane and straight out of the big smoke of Auckland. Transfer to Rotorua, get off the bus and into a big plastic ball – Ogo! Spend the afternoon negotiating the twists and turns of the Luge before a welcome dinner with a view, and a ‘hui’ or ‘meeting’ to brief the week ahead.
Up and away to Taupo. Blast away any remaining jet lag with Choice Bro #1 and the options of Rapids Jet or Cliff Hanger Swing! Take on the more cerebral challenge of the Amazing Race Taupo. In the afternoon, get to grips with the basics of paddling a Sea Kayak and take to the Great Lake Taupo to explore the beautiful and inspiring Maori carvings – accessible only by boat. Prep for your Expedition.
Expedition Day 1: Early start for a ride into the Tongariro National Park (Dual World Heritage status!) Spend the day navigating through remote alpine, volcanic terrain to camp stream side. This place is like something straight out of the movies. Unforgettable opportunity to hike trails highly regarded by the outdoor hardcore!
Expedition Day 2: Wake and pack tents for another early start. Navigate to our pickup point and rendezvous with our Rafts at the put-in on the Tongariro River (Class 3). Trade our hiking shoes for paddles and helmet and navigate the white water to our riverside campsite. Set-up a fly-camp (like a normal camp, but ‘rougher’?!) Relax in the pristine remoteness of the New Zealand native bush.
Overnight: Fly-camp Tongariro Riverside
Expedition Day 3: Pack up camp into the rafts and paddle out to the small township of Turangi. De-camp all equipment and have a shower (you will need it by now!). Spend the remainder of the day chilling out and rejuvenating in the natural hot springs of Tokaanu.
Service opportunity: Meet and greet some ‘hardout’ locals doing some amazing work in regards to the rejuvenation and re-establishment of flora and fauna in this region. You may be assisting with the ‘Whio Forever’ project, and/or ‘Project Tongariro’. Transit to Tokoroa and Papa o the Aroha Marae. Participate in the Powhiri and learn about the amazing Maori culture.
Overnight: Papa o te Aroha Marae, Tokoroa
Poroporoaki and depart for transit to Auckland and your international flight home. High fives, hugs and tears dominate as LBK wishes you safe travels – we’ll bring the Kleenex.
